Walgreens, the company that developed Lipitor, the brand name for Lipitor, has launched its own generic version of the drug, Norvasc.
Lipitor, which is a combination of the brand name Lipitor and the generic drug amlodipine besylate, is the first medication to be approved for use by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) for the treatment of hypertension and other types of high blood pressure.
In a statement, Mylan Pharmaceuticals Inc. said: “Lipitor has been a leader in the development and commercialisation of generic versions of angiotensin II receptor blockers. Norvasc is an angiotensin II receptor blocker that is approved by the FDA for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in patients with high blood pressure and is currently being used for this indication in the US.”
Norvasc works by blocking an enzyme called angiotensin II, which causes increased blood pressure.
The drug’s brand name is Amlodipine Besylate. Norvasc is the generic name for amlodipine besylate.
The company said it would be launching its own generic version of Amlodipine Besylate, which was developed and first marketed in the US in 2003.
